A trip to the cockpit. Wednesday February 10, 2010.

I got to go into the cockpit of a Canadair CRJ 100.  The cockpit was very small.  The controls looked like a giant computer game.  There were two pilots.  A man and a lady.  The lady was the one who flew the plane.  For our takeoff she flew the plane, then she put it on autopilot for the trip.  When we landed she flew the plane again.
They showed us the different displays and how they can tell if the cabin has oxygen, what is the temperature inside the plane.  We also saw the display showing the jet engines before the pilot starts the plane.  Taking off was really fast and we could not see much of the ground for most of the trip because of clouds.

Getting ready to leave

In 1 hour we are leaving. I'm very sad to leave this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and my new friends, but very happy to see my old friends and family, and share my Olympic Adventure with Canada and to share the message that if you work hard in everything you do, it will pay off. I hope to see the Olympics again, but as an athlete instead.

New format for blog.

In order to conserve space on the front page of the blog I will be linking each of the days at the Olympics to a separate page.

You will see above a section called "Pages". When you arrive at this blog you will be at the "Home" page.

Just click on the other pages listed and they will take you directly to the separate day's posting.

I already added Wednesday evening the first day I arrive at Vancouver.

Thanks for following.

An Inside look at CTV at the Olympics

My first cousin, Florence Hwang, works as a news librarian for the official TV station for the 2010 Olympics. I e-mailed her some questions that I hope to share the answers with you.

What is your job?

My job is to provide pre-approved past Olympic footage and news-related Olympic footage for our station and our affiliate stations. I primarily am a news librarian, not sports. If there is a news story that happens to be sports, I catalogue that story for our archives. If a story has Olympic footage, I make note in the record that we can only use this footage until a certain material rights related to the Olympics, once the games are over, go back to the International Olympic Committee. Because of this rule, we don't really stock Olympic footage.

What can you tell us about the IBC (International Broadcast Centre)?

It will have five TV stations... along with 7 control rooms, 21 editing suites... and more than 20 video logging positions. During the games 7000 broadcasters and technician from more than 100 countries will be producing over 5000 hours of live TV and Radio coverage from there.

What requests have you had in your job concerning the Olympics?
